It’s not that I am a prude, but things which last longer than I care to pay attention have always appealed to me. Then there’s metal roofing. Larry, my next-door neighbor, always talks about his brand new metal roof as the best thing since sliced bread. The comment made me wonder: Was Larry right, or was he simply trying to justify the cost of his new roof? Find out by chewing the fat. You can see benefits versus limitations of metal roofing in here.
First, let’s discuss longevity. The metal roof is like the uncle that’s always there for your family reunions. They are steadfast, and they seem eternal. The majority can last between 40 and 70 years. You don’t have worry about maintenance every few years. This is a nice change from the traditional shingles which are more of a full-time job.
Durability also is a big deal. Mother Nature has a way of playing tricks on us. From rain and hail the size of a baseball to sleet, she can do it all. The metal roofing system is able to withstand the weather and most of its problems. Dave’s metal roof is a big part of his weather discussions on weekends. Is it yet beer-o’clock?
With great power, however, comes… well, I’m sure you can guess the rest. Metal roofing can be expensive at first. The cost of these roofs is not for the weak-hearted. These roofs are an investment, like a guitar of high quality. The strings are less expensive upfront, but you’ll spend more on replacement and maintenance.
You’ve probably tried it. The experience can be similar to trying to sleep inside of a drummer set. Rain can be soothing to some people, while others prefer counting sheep. You can enjoy it or not.
The metal roofing is also energy efficient. The roofs will reflect heat from the sun in summer rather than absorb. The indoors will be cooler and you may even save a little on your AC bills. Consider it adding a sunhat inside your house. Your house will look cool and feel cooler.
The only problem is that they are susceptible to being dented. The metal on your roof can be dented, much like your teenage son or daughter’s car. The dents on your roof are not harmful, but they can still be a nuisance for a meticulous home owner.
We must not overlook the color variations that are chameleon like. The styles and shades of metal roofing are endless. Gables, gambrels, barn-style–you’ve got choices. This is like dressing your house up in its Sunday best. Make sure that you are committed to the project. Painting is more challenging than changing shingles.
We must also mention that metals are eco-friendly. Metals can be recycled more often than asphalt shingles. You can transform an old denim coat into a beautiful quilt.
After considering pros and con, your choice may depend on the things that are most important to YOU. You should always weigh all of your options before making a decision. A metal roof is not the best option for every home, but it may make sense if your goal is to have peace ofmind.
